Why "Licorice and Cashews"?

When I went on my first backpacking adventure, somehow, and for some unknown reason, I mixed my licorice and cashews together in one bag. The discovery . . . a yummy combination, one I would have never put together, but have enjoyed since (the combination tastes even better when they have sat in a backpack with the sun beating down of them!). I have found that this ideology has been the pattern for many of the greatest aspects of my life - my marriage, my boys and their complete diversity, my family, and my interests - sweet and salty, forever a blessing! So, there you go, licorice and cashews!

". . . our children will receive them with thankful hearts, and look upon them that they may learn with joy and not with sorrow, neither with contempt, concerning their first parents." - Jacob 4:3, The Book of Mormon

I want to see you game, boys, I want to see you brave and manly, and I also want to see you gentle and tender.

Be practical as well as generous in your ideals. Keep your eyes on the stars and keep your feet on the ground.

Courage, hard work, self-mastery, and intelligent effort are all essential to successful life.

Character, in the long run, is the decisive factor in the life of an individual and of nations alike.

Theodore Roosevelt (Quotations taken from "Youth" engravings in the rotunda at the American Museum of Natural History, NYC)

As you journey through life, choose your destination well, but do not hurry there. You will arrive soon enough. Wander the back roads and forgotten paths, keeping your destination in your heart, like the fixed point of a compass.

Seek out new voices, strange sights, and ideas foreign to your own. Such things are riches for the soul. And if upon arrival, you find your destination is not exactly as you had dreamed, do not be disappointed.

Think of all you would have missed but for the journey there, and know that the true worth of your travels lies not in where you come to be at journey's end, but in who you came to be along the way.
